Biography of Louis H. Desmarais Sunday, Oct 10 2010

Along side the biography for my Great Great Grandfather George Desmarais, I found the biography for his brother Louis H. Desmarais.  Another interesting read.  Enjoy!

LOUIS H. DESMARAIS.

Louis H. Desmarais, now identified with the farming interests at Moxee City, was
born on the St. Lawrence river sixty miles east of Montreal, Canada, February 2,
1871, a son of Israel and Sophia (Desmarais) Desmarais. His parents removed to
Crookton, Minnesota, in 1881, when he was a lad of ten years, and there the
father engaged in farming until November, 1900, when he came to the Yakima
valley and took up his abode on the Moxee river. He bought fifty acres of land
but afterward sold that property and purchased ten acres on Nob Hill. This he
planted to fruit and successfully developed his orchard but afterward sold out.
His last days were spent in the home of his son, Louis H., and there he passed
away in August, 1917. His widow survives and is yet living with her son.

Louis H. Desmarais, a lad of ten years at the time the family home was
established in Minnesota, acquired his education in the public schools of
Canada and of the United States. He assisted his father from early boyhood in
the work of the farm and afterward became actively engaged in ranching. While
still living in Minnesota he purchased land and there carried on agricultural
pursuits until 1900, when he came to Washington. Reaching the Yakima valley he
purchased thirty acres of land and afterward disposed of that property. In 1901
he bought sixty acres east of Moxee City and has extended the boundaries of the
farm until it now embraces one hundred acres. He had the entire place planted to
hops at one time, becoming one of the most extensive hop raisers of the Yakima
valley, and in the cultivation of that crop he met with substantial success. He
is now engaged in raising corn and other cereals in addition to hops and has a
splendidly improved ranch property, equipped with substantial buildings and
well kept fences and the best farm machinery.
On the 27th of November, 1899, Mr. Desmarais was united in marriage to Miss
Regina Crevier, a native of Canada, and to them have been born seven children:
Beatrice, Henry, Maurice, Rachel, Irene, Phillip and Andrew. The parents and
children are all members of the Holy Rosary Catholic church, in which they have
taken an active part while generously contributing to its support.

In his political views Mr. Desmarais is a republican but not an office seeker.
He has always preferred to concentrate his efforts and attention upon his
business affairs and aside from ranching he assisted in organizing the Moxee
State Bank in 1914 and has since been its president.

Biography of George E. Desmarais Sunday, Oct 10 2010

I found this biography of my Great Great Grandfather George E. Desmarais.  Interesting read with great information on the family.  Enjoy!

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jtenlen/desmaraisge.txt

The History of the Yakima Valley, Washington, Comprising Yakima, Kittitas and
Benton Counties, The S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1919, Volume II, page 336

GEORGE E. DESMARAIS.

George E. Desmarais is the owner of an excellent farm property of one hundred
and twenty acres not far from Moxee City. This he has brought under a high state
of cultivation, transforming it into very productive fields. His business
interests are thereby successfully conducted and he is meeting with well
deserved prosperity in what he undertakes. He was born in Quebec, Canada,
September 14, 1880, a son of Israel and Sophia Desmarais, who in 1882 removed
from Canada to Crookston, Minnesota. They are mentioned at length on another
page of this work in connection with the sketch of Louis Desmarais, a brother of
the subject of this review.

George E. Desmarais attended school in Minnesota and in 1900, when twenty years
of age, made his way to the northwest. Arriving in Yakima county, he purchased
thirteen acres of wild land on the Moxee that was covered with sagebrush. No
plow had ever turned a furrow upon this tract and it required much arduous labor
to transform the hitherto undeveloped district into the rich fields seen today.
Mr. Desmarais worked on energetically and persistently, however, and as his
financial resources increased he kept adding to his original holdings until he
now has one hundred and twenty acres of valuable and productive farm land, all
of which is under cultivation. He is engaged extensively in raising hay, corn,
grain, beets, potatoes and hops. He built a home upon his place and has added
many modern improvements which make this one of the attractive farm properties
of the district.

On the 29th of February, 1905, Mr. Desmarais was married to Miss Amabiles
Crevier, who was born in Canada, where they were married. Their children were:
Cecelia; Euclid, deceased: Alice; Florence; Robert; Leon; Corina; one who died
in infancy; George; and another child who passed away in infancy.

The family are all members of the Holy Rosary Catholic church. In politics Mr.
Desmarais maintains an independent course, voting for men and measures rather
than for party. He belongs to the Knights of Columbus and also to the Modern
Woodmen of America. He is interested in public progress along all lines leading
to the benefit of the community at large and he has served as a director of the
drainage district. His business affairs have been most carefully and
successfully conducted and he is today one of the most prosperous farmers of his
part of the state. A line orchard upon his home place proves the value of the
region for fruit raising and he now has extensive crops of grain and vegetables
where was found wild sagebrush land at the time of his arrival in the state.

1881 Canada Census – Israel’s Family Friday, Sep 24 2010

I found Israel’s family listed in the 1881 Canada Census thanks to the census indexing at beta.familysearch.org.  I found an image of the census at http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e326/e008146071.pdf.

Two odd observations with this census record.

1) It has a son with the name listed as Adolard, born in 1866.  Now I know Adelard was a popular name back in that area during those days.  But I think it’s obvious the scribe of the census entered an “o” instead of an “e.”  I can’t help but think the scribe just didn’t spell the name right.  Moving on though… that’s not the mystery.  The mystery is that other sources show a son born in 1866 with the name Israel.  I imagine they are one and the same Israel E (Jr.) and Adolard, but I’ve yet to prove it.  A website I reference periodically, cjutras.org, has the son’s name as Edonor but his name at baptism as Israel-Adhemard-Dit-Edonor DESMARAIS.  Sadly, cjutras.org doesn’t plainly provide their sources.  And I haven’t verified this name elsewhere.  Makes sense though.  Even the close relation between Adhemard and Adolard.  Coincidence?

2) There is a Marie Desmarais, born 1806 listed in the household of Israel E. (Sr.).  75 years of age?  Who could this be?  Israel and Sophie’s parents were not named Marie.  Then again, many women of that time and place had Marie somewhere in their name, if anything part of their name at baptism.  I was hoping the birth year 1806 would be the key but I’ve yet to find a relative yet with that birth year.  Who was widow Marie living with Israel’s family?

Ah, and lastly, interestingly the family was living in Saint-Thomas-de-Pierreville, Yamaska, not Saint-Francois-du-Lac (where many of the Desmarais lived in times past).

More on the family of Israel E. Desmarais Sunday, Sep 19 2010

I spent a bit more time today looking for Israel’s children.   Using two unique sources, I was able to find add the following children to the family:

Israel E Desmarais, M, b. 1866
Severin Peter Desmarais, M, b. Jan 1873
George Emile Desmarais, M, b. 14 Sep 1880
Henry Desmarais, M, b. Jun 1883
Roch Desmarais, M, b. 30 May 1884
Alma Desmarais, F, b. Aug 1887

I still need to find information for the remaining children:

Regina Desmarais, F, b. abt 1868
Louis Hegesippe Desmarais, M, b. 2 Feb 1870
Bertha Desmarais, F, b. 12 Dec 1878

I know they’re out there some where.  This family hasn’t exactly been difficult to research.  I just need to spent more time.

As to my two sources, they were

1900 United States Census
Washington State Death Certificates 1907-1960

One interesting bit of mystery today was the “death certificate” of Israel Sr.  They had his mother’s name recorded as Margurite Blazen.  This is the same surname my mother had on her records.  yet I’ve found elsewhere that Israel married a Marguerite Crevier in Saint-François-du-Lac in Quebec, Canada.  I can’t help but wonder if Marguerite remarried.  That would make sense being that this new “Blazen” name shows up on a death certificate, later in their lives.

Israel E. Desmarais Family Sunday, Sep 12 2010

Up till now, my focus has been to find all the past generations.  I’ve almost found my great grandfathers lineage going back eight generations.  What may turn out to be sad is that I opted to pass by documenting the children of all these past families.  So now I find myself drawn back to finding and documenting the children in past families.

So today, I decided to start with my great, great, great-grandfather Israel Edward Desmarais and his family.

I know from my mother’s research that Israel had 9 children:

Israel Eudonore Desmarais, M, b. 4 Feb 1866
Regina Desmarais, F, b. abt 1868
Louis Hegesippe Desmarais, M, b. 2 Feb 1870
Severin Peter Desmarais, M, b. Jan 1873
Bertha Desmarais, F, b. 12 Dec 1878
George Emile Desmarais, M, b. 14 Sep 1880
Henry Desmarais, M, b. Jun 1883
Roch Desmarais, M, b. 30 May 1884
Alma Desmarais, F, b. Aug 1887

For some of these children she has additional information such as birth place and death date.

I’d like to try find these children in the records and learn more about them.  I’ve found the family thus far in the 1881 Canadian census.  Also the 1900 US census.

In the 1900 US Census they are found in Moxee, Yakima, Washington, USA:
Enumeration District 0110
Sheet Number and Letter 11A
Household ID 230

Four children (George, Henry, Roch & Alma) are still in the household in 1900.  I’ll be posting their information to my family tree and then see if I can find the other children and other records.

A slow but steady process!

Mes Racines Saturday, Sep 11 2010

Mes Racines… “My Roots” in French.  In this blog you won’t find anything too glamorous.  A simple blog that focuses on my Desmarais Family history.  My grandmother is a Desmarais, coming from a long family line that has deep roots from a small town: Saint-François-du-Lac, Yamaska-Nicolet, Quebec, Canada.

For the most part, you’ll find this blog to be more like a journal as I share my endeavors to “dig up my roots,” learn more about them.

Enjoy!
